Stand-alone episodes mean each installment tells a complete story with its own characters and setting, so you can watch any episode without needing to follow a continuing arc. That format is what an anthology series uses: a different story (and often different cast) in each episode, so every episode stands on its own. Real-life reality shows focus on actual people and events, and soap operas rely on ongoing, serialized plots that evolve over many episodes. Miniseries tell one continuous story across a limited number of episodes, not a series of separate tales. So the best fit for a show built around self-contained episodes is an anthology series.
